Microdermabrasion first gained popularity as a cosmetic procedure in day spas, medical spas and doctor’s practices. It quickly gained favor for being less invasive than other dermatological procedures. Now it is available in cheap, easy to use home microdermabrasion kits.

How it works:

Microdermabrasion is a painless procedure in which fine particles are used to smooth the skin. This is achieved by scrubbing away the stratum corneum, the very top layer of skin. This layer, known as the stratum corneum, is the top layer of dead skin cells that act as a barrier between the lower layers of skin and the outside world.

Benefits of microdermabrasion:

Fine creases and wrinkles often appear in the stratum corneum, and microdermabrasion helps to clear these away. People who use this treatment option report that they have younger looking skin and fewer wrinkles. It can also help to remove sun-damaged skin, remove or lessen the appearance of scars and dark spots.

By removing that top layer of skin, the body is led to believe that some damage has occurred on the surface of the skin. To compensate, it automatically boosts the production of new, healthy skin cells, which can lead to younger-looking skin. Some claim that is also increases collagen production, but this has yet to be backed up by any scientific or clinical evidence.

Microdermabrasion is suitable for use on all skin tones and types, making it more universally accessible. It also has the fewest side effects of any dermatological procedure.

What is the benefit of using a home microdermabrasion kit?

At $25-$50 for each kit, home microdermabrasion is by far the cheaper option than professional treatments, which start at $100 per treatment. The kits are less powerful, but are effective in maintaining the results of clinical microdermabrasion. They are quite safe to use and is not a difficult procedure to perform.

Tips on how to use your home kit:

Always read the instructions before using your home microdermabrasion kit. Look at all the products that come in the kit and ensure that you know what they are all for. It is advisable that you keep the packaging and instructions in case you need to refer back to them in the future.

Test patches are highly recommended before use of the product. A reaction to any of the ingredients in the microdermabrasion formula can last days or even weeks. To test, apply a small amount of the cream to your forehead, chin or behind your ear. Wait 24 hours after testing to make sure that you do not suffer any allergic reactions.

Often it is best to use these kits in the evening. Many will cause temporary redness and some sensitivity in the area treated. Some may also have particles that are hard to rinse off, in which case you may wish to use the treatment just before your evening shower.

1.Make sure you are in a place that is clean, brightly lit, provides access to a mirror and has warm, running water available. A good place is usually the bathroom.

2.Use the cleanser that comes with the kit, or your regular cleansing gel to clean the area being treated. Wash thoroughly after cleaning.

3.Read the instructions to see if your face should be dry or left slightly damp when using the product. Use either a provided sponge or applicator, or your fingers, to gently massage the cream into your skin. Be careful not to massage it too much into any one area, as this can cause irritation to the skin.

4.Rinse the cream off very thoroughly. If the crystals won’t come off then hop into the shower.

5.Gently pat your face dry with a soft towel.

6.Moisturize your face, either with the nourishing cream that comes in the kit or with your own moisturizer.
